Fire. No one likes to be burned. Fire safety is a topic that is important no matter where you are. Most of the steps covered below can be at school or at home. So pay attention and then be sure to go home and tell your parents what you learned. And then you can make your own Fire Safety Plan.
Step-By-Step
In the event of an Fire at school, perform the following:
- Remain calm - In the event that a fire alarm is signaled during school hours, whether manually or automatically, remain calm, quiet and pay attention to your teacher.
- Wait for instruction - Unfortunately, a common trick among shooters is to pull a fire alarm to force students into the hallway, thereby, allowing the shooter to inflict a lot of harm. Many schools have procedures in place where designated administrators and teachers check that a fire is occurring and that there are no shooters around. Once the check is complete, they will signal for the students that it is safe to leave.
- Leave all of your stuff - Leave your backpacks, books, lunchboxes, and everything! No time to waste.
- Line up - Remember Step 1? That's right! Remain calm, but now it's time to line up. Should we run around? No. That's right. We should not run around. Running around could cause others to get hurt.
- Check the door handle - If the door handle is hot, we will not exit. If it is cool, get out of the school. If you can't exit through the door, try a window.
- Follow the leader - Your teacher will tell you where to go. Be sure to stay close. Hurry but don't run.
- Stay low - If there is smoke in the classroom or hallways, crouch down while leaving the school. Smoke rises and cleaner air is closer to the floor.
- Meet up - Once outside, continue to stay with your class and meet up in the safety area. This is usually a spot that's far away from the fire.
- Help others - If during your exit you notice someone that needs help, scream "HELP!" as loud as you can until an adult comes to help.
- Be brave - If you are stuck in an area and need a Firefighter to rescue you, don't be afraid of them. They may look scary, but they're here to help. Take a look at the Firefighter to the right so you won't be scared if you see one.
