Unfortunately, we live in an era where we have to prepare students for the event of an Active Shooter. Whether at a local elementary school or world renown university, the following tips could save your life.
Step-By-Step
In the event of an Active Shooter situation, remember the following:
- AVOID
- Leave the area if safe to do so.
- If you do leave the classroom, leave all belongings behind.
- Once you have exited the premises, prevent others from entering the danger area.
- Call 9-1-1 or campus police after reaching safety.
- Leave the area if safe to do so.
- DENY
- If you cannot leave the classroom, lock and secure all doors. Turn off the lights.
- Barricade the door if possible. Remain calm and quiet.
- Stay away from doors and windows. Avoid being seen.
- Stand against an interior wall and out of the line of fire.
- Be prepared to fight back if the shooter gains entry.
- DEFEND
- If escape is not an option and you are unable to deny entry to the shooter, fight back, but only as a last resort.
- Develop a plan to defend yourself and others.
- Focus on surprising and taking down the shooter.
- Improvise weapons from what is around you.
- Be loud and aggressive. Use your strength in numbers.
- Disarm the shooter, but do not pick up the gun.
- RECOVER
- Follow all instructions from police officers during the arrest and apprehension of the shooter.
- Keep hands in the air until cleared.
- Once the scene has been secured, Emergency Services personnel will enter and provide medical support.
- Continue to follow instructions from Emergency Service personnel until released from the scene.
